Drum Island in the Straw Hat Pirates

The Straw Hat Pirates make a detour from their journey to Alabasta and stop at Drum Island to get some medical help for Nami who was sickened by the poisonous flea Cestia in Little Garden. However, they have a run-in with the pirate Wapol who wields the baku baku no mi Devil Fruit that lets him consume anything and manifest it within his body. Wapol wants to monopolize the healthcare on the island and drive all other doctors out so people will have to beg him for medical attention. Thankfully, Luffy uses his own Devil Fruit powers to throw him out of the kingdom and give Drum Island to his ex-Royal Guard friend Dalton who is now the king of the island. He also renames it to the Sakura Kingdom in honor of Dr. Hiriluk who was an eccentric doctor on the island who acted as a father figure to Chopper.

The new king also greatly increases the size of the kingdom’s military and establishes a national guard which includes the most ferocious rabbit Lapans. The king also has the ability to transform into a bird, making him the most powerful animal in the kingdom.

On a side note, the people of drum island are known to be very poor and are constantly plagued with sickness due to the toxic spores spread by Mushur who used his spore fruit abilities to test them out on the entire kingdom. Mushur also committed mass murder with his spore power and was banished to Kilauea for his crimes.

Aside from this, the island has a lot of seafood nurseries including oysters, shrimp, flounder, crab, and many coastal fish species. In addition, it has a rich natural reserve of trees and wildlife such as the rare bird called kakusui which can only be found on this island.

Drum Island is located in Charleston Harbor and the shoreline is subject to severe wind, wave, and tidal current action. The island is composed of low lying spartina marsh, high marsh, vegetated upland areas and meandering tidal creeks.

Currently, Atlas Surveying is working on the Drum Island project to conduct topographic and bathymetric surveys to locate mean high and low water lines, eroded scarps along the shoreline, existing perimeter of dikes and berms, as well as existing reference benchmarks.

This is a great opportunity to help this valuable state resource while improving the overall water quality and restoring its biological integrity. The project is being managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources with funding provided by the South Carolina Port Authority. Atlas Surveying is proud to play a role in this important restoration and protection effort for this valuable habitat. If you’d like to learn more about our work on this project, please contact us.
